Meghan Sunbeam
Another New Entry!!! Ok, so I'm not doing so well on my
objective to update once a week. But I'll do better!

Law & Order)
Well, I’m sure some of you are wondering, “What exactly does Meghan do at her job?” so I’ll answer you! My title is coordinator, and yes it really is as simple as it seems. I coordinate the director, not her clothing or that kind of thing. But her business day, her meetings, her phone calls, all that good stuff. One of my tasks is to go through all the mail that comes to the office and distribute it appropriately. Since the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Women’s Center are under our office, their mail comes to me also and so I have to sort out mail for each office, and then I have to sort all the junk out. We get lots of junk, everybody wants us to pay them to let us go to their conferences. So I have to decide which ones I think Earlina, my boss, will actually be interested, decide if we have enough in our travel fund for her to attend if she wants, and then give them to her if we do. Earlina also has several subscriptions to various EEO and AA newsletters and magazines and she gets ads for tons more. So I also have to go through them and give her the ones she’s subscribed to and decide if any of the others are worth her time. She’d also appreciate it if I read and summarized them for her… ;-) And of course I do this for the other two offices also. Another thing I do is answer the general office phone and Earlina’s personal line as well if she’s in a meeting or on the phone. I also do some purchasing, although not much since our office doesn’t do a whole lot of purchasing. And as the only office support for the other two offices, I do their purchasing as well. Or at least approve them to purchase things. I’m in charge of the budget for all three offices, and I coordinate with the Provost’s Fiscal Office for that, mostly asking them questions that I’m sure are plainly obvious to them, but then they’re Fiscal Officers who have all worked here for many years, while I’m just a coordinator who has only been here for two months! In December, Earlina and I will start entering the data to create our Affirmative Action Plan for the next Calendar year. I find that somewhat funny, since we go with an Academic year for contracts, but we go with the Calendar year for our AAP plan… oh well, probably some government rule. If there’s one thing I’ve learned so far about the government and Affirmative Action it’s that things move quite slowly. For example, the 2000 census had a variety of race categories to choose from. Categories like, White (non-Hispanic),
Hispanic, African-American, African-American-Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander, Asian, Asian-Hispanic, Asian-African-American, etc. Now currently the Affirmative Action Plan (and Affirmative Action Laws) use only five: white, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American. Why the difference you ask? Because there are currently five separate government organizations arguing over whether or not they want to officially accept the race codes used in the 2000 census. They’ve been arguing since 2000. As soon as they decide though, they’ll say “Ok, this is what you need to use and we expect you to have it all changed in the next few months.” And we’ll start pulling our hair out, because we don’t keep track of the race like that, because we have to use the other for AAP! Oh well. Anyway, I’m also the first point of contact for people who come to the office with complaints. Right now that means I get a very basic idea of what kind of complaint it is and then transfer them to Earlina or set up a meeting with Earlina for them. Eventually though Earlina would like me to be able to do more, so I’m working my way through all the regulations. I’m also in charge of the department website, which I’m in the process of figuring out how I’m supposed to change. Right now it’s very basic, and (if I’m allowed to be totally honest) not very professional looking. I want to make it much more professional looking and use it for more than just telling who works in the office. Earlina also does training on campus and so I coordinate the training sessions with the various departments wanting them and schedule rooms and such. Well I’m sure that’s enough talking about my job for now. I’ve probably bored you all to tears! Love you and miss you all and I’m so glad that no one was hurt in the Shultz fire. (If you haven’t heard
click here for the link: Shultz
Fire.)
Sunbeam's Note:
Hi again! So I've discovered the best place
to sleep at night, my Mom's shoulder! It's
warm, comfey, close to Mom and the best part is
that it always startles her when I come running
in and jump on her shoulder! Hehehe. I'm
glad that Mom and Dad have finally found a good
routine. That means that they can play with
me more. They seem to be happier too. Well,
I'm off to hide, I'll talk to you all again
sometime!

Geez… has it really been a month since I’ve updated this? I guess it has. Sorry people, I don’t know why I have so much trouble updating this blog. Anyway, so you all want to know what I’ve been up to since you heard from me last. Well, work has been good. I was sent to Denver, Colorado from September 21st-23rd for training and that was an adventure. First of all it was the first time I had ever traveled all by myself. Apart from that aspect of it, it was one of those Murphy’s Law situations. Everything that could go wrong, did. To start with, I was scheduled to leave on the 21st from Fairbanks Airport at 7:00am. Our alarm clock didn’t go off and we woke up at 6:45am. Fortunately we’re only 5 minutes from the airport and I’d done all my packing and printed out my boarding pass the night before. And as I was going through security they called ahead and held the plane for me. I literally ran onto the plane in stocking feet (since you have to take your shoes off to go through security.) After that Wednesday’s traveling went well. I got into Denver at around 6pm, got to my hotel and had some Ramen and fruit so I ate in my hotel room. The next morning I had to take a taxi to the training location (which was only supposed to be 5 minutes from my hotel) and so I got up early and got dressed and was down in the lobby by 7:00am. They called a taxi for me and he got there around 7:20am. Now taxi drivers are supposed to be these great people who know the city like the back of their hand and can get anywhere, right? Someone forgot to tell this guy that. He got lost. Actually what happened, was when I was telling him the address of where I wanted to go, he heard 9th and thought 9th Street, in Old Golden. So he started driving, and when I started seeing cows and the tab was up to $16, I started worrying. And he got to 9th Street and asked me for the address again and I gave it to him again, emphasizing that I wanted 9th Avenue and he turned off the tab and took me back where I needed to be (in new Golden) and only charged me $6. The training went really well and I learned a ton and met some great people at the company and met some people who were also staying at my hotel, so I got a ride back with them (rather than trust another taxi driver), but first we went to the Colorado Mills Mall, which was huge and great and had a Barnes and Noble and a SuperTarget in it. So I got to bed around 10:30pm that night and tossed and turned until around 12:30am when I fell asleep and then woke up around 3:30am feeling nauseous and sick to my stomach. I didn’t throw up, but I didn’t get back to sleep either and around 7:00am I was still feeling sick, but I went to training again (with the people I rode back with this time.) And the training went well again, though I was feeling sick and nauseous all day and around 2:30pm I left with another woman to catch the Golden Commuter Shuttle back to the Denver Airport and catch my flight at 6:20pm. And when I got to my gate (the other woman was also at the same gate, since she was flying AlaskaAir as well) I found out that my flight had been delayed until 10:30pm. And at that point I cried. Well as the other woman was boarding her plane she told me she’d say a prayer for me and that she was sure God would work it all out. She was certainly a blessing from God, that made me feel a little better and after the flight had left I went up to the counter (with everyone else from my flight) and said, “My ultimate destination is Fairbanks, what can you do for me?” in a voice that was fairly tearful still. And the guy behind the counter looked very confused and said to the girl next to him, “What can we do for her?” and she said, “Oh, I had already seen that passenger on the list and I’ve made arrangements already.” They switched me to a flight with Frontier which was leaving at 6:40pm and flying straight to Anchorage (my Denver flight stopped in Seattle where I switched planes.) And then I took an AlaskaAir flight from Anchorage to Fairbanks (since I’m pretty sure that AlaskaAir is the only company still flying passengers into Fairbanks.) And I arrived in Fairbanks only 15 minutes later than I was originally supposed to. I think that’s probably enough for this blog entry. I’ll try to update again soon, instead of waiting forever.
Sunbeam's Note:
Hi again! It's very annoying when Mom doesn't
let me on to update my blog. Anyway, yesterday
I stole a piece of pork off Mom's plate and she
didn't even notice! I was pretty sneaky, and
she was sitting right behind me! Dad didn't
notice either. And then later, she gave me
another piece, I guess she hadn't noticed that I'd
already taken one! So it's getting pretty
cold outside here. I'm glad that I stay inside.
Dad usually keeps the apartment pretty warm,
although today he turned it down too far and it
got too cold. I miss Uncle Poly, if you're
reading Uncle Poly, I hope its nice and warm where
you are. Hopefully Mom will let me on to update
my blog faster than she did this time.

Watching - Sunbeam run around

Once again I got to use my envelope
stuffing talents, which I haven't used since I worked for the
Learning Support Center in 99-2000. I even got to read the news on
CNN.com while I was stuffing the envelopes. Of course, I wouldn't
have had to stuff these particular envelopes if people could actually
communicate clearly with each other. I've decided that work life is
like family life in many ways. Only on a grander scale. For
example. You've decided that you want to plan a big family reunion.
So, you start coordinating with your family. Naturally some people
get back to you quickly, while others don't seem to be inclined to
respond. You've finally agreed with a day and time with most of your
family and you've made all the invitations. And then your Aunt calls
you and she’s like “Oh, we meant this day and this time, not this
day and this time…” and you’re like, “but I thought we'd all
agreed on this day and this time!” But she's insistent, so
naturally you make new invitations and warn those who already
received invitations. And you try to coordinate the new day and time
with your family, and then your Aunt calls you again and says “well
that other day will work after all, but we still want our time.”
And so once again you type up a new invitation and print more and
send them out and tell everybody who already RSVP’ed that they’ll
be getting a notice with changed time…
Anyhoo. Life is good here, envelope
stuffing and communication aside.job.
Sunbeam's Note:
I'm glad we're finally living in one place. That
whole business of moving was pretty nasty. I
didn't care for staying in one place one night and
then another the next. And the car rides were
interesting, but being cooped up in the crate got
old fast; I didn't get to see any of the interesting
stuff my people parents were looking at -- or to
stretch my legs much!
We've been living in this apartment for a few
weeks now so I think hopefully we're here to stay
for a while. I don't see the crate, so either
they hid it better than they usually did -- or maybe
they got rid of it! That would be the best!
Now I've just gotta find someone to annoy during
the day while they're gone. I got used to
having Uncle Poly around to harass! My people
parents got me a stuff frog to maul, and that's
good, but he doesn't get very disgruntled with me
so it's not quite the same thing.

- Sunbeam run around a hotel room
Driving for forever gets kinda dull after a while. But
fortunately we've got lots of books-on-tape and
I've got a digital camera. So commentary on
the states. Illinois - Indiana with cities
closer together. Wisconsin - cool, lots of
hills. Minnisota - Indiana, lots of endless corn.
North Dakota - flat forever. Manitoba
- cool after you get past Winnipeg. Saskatchewan
- cool, lots of hills and wetlands.
So our adventures with the
border crossing. We pulled into the nothing
to declare lanes and when we got to the window this,
seemingly very bored, lady starts rattling off questions
and asking for IDs. We gave her probably way
more ID than we needed to, but we didn't give her
anything for Sunbeam, cause she didn't ask about
pets and didn't really leave room for us to insert
comments. When she asked for our ID we gave
her (for each of us), Driver's License, Passport,
Birth Cirtificate, and Social Security card. I
also had the marriage license (cause my name on
my passport and my birth cirtificate is obviously
not my married name.) So then she starts rattling
off questions about what we have with us, do we
have the following illegal weapons, any drugs, etc.
Each time she rattles off a long list of items
she does it so quickly that we have to pause when
she's done as our brains are trying to catch up
to the present. So naturally that looks kinda
suspicious. Plus she gave us the most incredulous
look when we responded that the number of tobacco
and alchohol products in our posession was zero.
And then after she rattles off a huge long
list of weapons and we say we have none of them,
she says that do we realize that those weapons are
illegal in Canada and if they search our vehicle
and find any we'll be arrested. So then she
flags us to go to the garage and have our vehicle
searched. Who knows why... And we get
to the garage and these three very nice, polite
men ask us to step out with our valuables so that
they can search the car. And they let us take
out Sunbeam too. And then one of them pulls
out a random bag while the other two ask for our
keys and unlock our cartop carrier. Once they're
done searching those, one pops the hood and the
other two go back to the U-haul and unlock that
and pull out some random bags and search them (after
laughing at the giant Care Bear, which greeted them
of course.) Once they were done they needed
Nick's help to get everything shoved back in and
the U-haul shut. But fortunately they didn't
have the desire to search the whole thing, so we
didn't have to repack the whole thing. And
then the come over and are like, "so you don't
have ANY firearms?" And we're like "nope."
And then the guy who seemed to be in charge
was like "not even any mace or anything to
fend off bears in Alaska?" and Nick is like
"nope, figured if we needed mace to fend off
bears in Alaska, we'd get it in Alaska." and
then the guy is like "no weapons of any kind?"
and Nick is like, "nope" and I'm like,
"just Sunbeam, we figure we'll throw her at
bears." and he laughed and was like "yeah,
she'd hiss and claw at them huh." And
then they gave us our keys back and let us go. They
seemed pretty perplexed as to why we'd been asked
to go in there.
After that the trip was
pretty uneventful... except for the adventure of
finding gas in the little bitty towns we came to.
I've got lots of pictures, hopefully I'll
be able to upload some of them soon.
We miss everyone. It
still hasn't really sunk in that this isn't just
a vacation. That we really are going and not
planning on coming back for a while. Maybe
it will sink in when we're there and I'm starting
my new job.
Sunbeam's Note:
I think I agree with Mom's assessment of the
States we've passed through. Although clearly
the Border Lady didn't ask about cats because she
knew that there was no way one of us would desire
to sabotage her country. Clearly she understood
that our superior intellect causes us to be no harm.
Especially when we wouldn't even consider
going anywhere without a Rabies shot. So all
in all this whole travel thing isn't so bad. I
wish Mom would let me out of my crate more often
though, there's so much to look at outside and it's
hard to see through bars. She did let me sit
in her lap for a while when it was noisy, so that
was good. I miss Uncle Poly and Gramma and
Grampa though.

Well the wonderful David and Marci have found us a good
housing possibility that accepts pets! So
that means Sunbeam gets to go with us!!! Nicky's
posted our trip schedule so you all can follow us,
and we'll try to update the site with pictures and
blogs whenever we're someplace with internet access.
I'm getting a bit apprehensive
about the job. Jane put it best, she said
something along the lines of when you enter a job
you assume that your predecessors did everything
absolutely perfectly and that you'll be forever
in figuring it all out and being as good. She
said she was relieved when she started going through
old files and found mistakes. I'm feeling
much that same way. And on top of that thinking
about having to switch to using a Mac platform.
I'm very much an IBM person, so I'll have
a bunch to learn all at the same time.
I'm getting excited about
the trip, but not really about having to pack things
up. I suppose that once we actually have the
trailer loading things up will go easy. I'm
usually good at fitting lots of stuff in tight places.
Fitting lots of stuff in a big place should
be easy too. Next thing we know we'll be in
Alaska and on a great new adventure!
My dad and grandparents
came by today to say goodbye. It was fun to
see them again and get to spend time with them.
G'ma and G'pa told us lots of stories about
Alaska and good places to stop along the way. And
Dad helped Nick put the Cartop Carrier on the Blazer
in a very secure manner. He's very good at
that, I think I must have inherited my car stuffing
genes from him. We'll definitely miss everyone
here, and we'll be praying for everyone and hoping
that we get to come back sometime soon.
Sunbeam's Note:
Once again Mom is strange. There were strange
people in the house today and she made me come down
and be sociable. And apparently we're going
on some kind of trip. She told me that I'd
like it, but I'm not really sure. According
to my memory, Alaska is quite far away, and I'm
not certain we can reach it in three hours. Three
hours is the longest I've ever ridden in one of
those cars, hopefully this will be an ok trip.

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!!!! I GOT A JOB!!!!
Wow, we've got so much to do now! So, I had a phone interview with
the UAF people this afternoon at 2:30pm Central time. And they said
that ideally they'd have a decision made by the end of the day (their
time not my time) and that it would be the end of the week at the
latest. Which is what I expected it would be. Since I thought the
interview had gone well I decided to make celebratory chocolate chip
cookies. And so around 7 I was getting ready to make my cookies and I
got the phone call!!!
They offered me the job! I was so excited! I'm
supposed to call tomorrow and give them an idea of when we will leave
to go up there. The person who called me was the person I'll be working
for, Earlina Bowden, and she seems really nice and flexible. And she
told me the best part of the job is that the Anthropology department is
in the same building and indeed, even on the same floor as where I'll
be working! How interesting is that!
Well, I'll let Sunbeam talk now and get back to my cookies.
Sunbeam's Note:
Well, I had to lie across the keyboard in
order to get my mom to pay attention to me. But
she did actually pay attention to me today. And
she played with me some too. But she seems
to have developed this fascination with taking pictures
of me. Dad never should have gotten her a
digital camera.

Well disappointingly enough
we haven't played Halfcourt in a while. But
we have a good reason. On Friday we purchased
a new auto-focus camera for Nick and a digital camera
for me and we've been going out every day and taking
pictures. Saturday we went to Anderson Mounds,
Sunday we went to Brookville and Monday we just
went out driving in the countryside around Alexandria.
I'm glad we've got a digital camera now cause
that will make it much easier to share our great
adventure with all of you! (Which of course
was the reason for buying it... ;-) ) We decided
that we could get quality cameras if we used one
of our gift cards as well as pitching in some of
our own money. (Actually I decided this, Nick
took some convincing. He needed to be convinced
that this wasn't just a frivolous purchase when
we needed to save money.) Tomorrow hopefully
I'll have time to post some pictures on here!
So on the job front, I'm
still waiting to hear back from people, and I've
got a few places to call tomorrow. Hopefully
we'll start hearing things soon. Even a no
would be something!! Pray that we hear things
soon.
Sunbeam's Note:
My mom and dad have not been spending much time

to want to stay downstairs with Gramma and Grampa.
I've been forced to start venturing downstairs
to get them to listen to me. Tomorrow though
mom will be home, so hopefully she'll talk with
me instead of always being downstairs.

A new twist on the ever-changing game of Halfcourt!!
When its yucky hot out and you want to play,
just put a sprinkler in the middle of the court!!
Of course, you might want to play in your
bathing suit then... and that requires lots more
bug stuff... But if the buggies don't consider
you a five-star buffet, you probably don't have
a problem to begin with.
Those buggies are stupid!
I put bug stuff everywhere and they still
find places to bite me!! Example, yesterday
I had bug stuff all over every exposed part of skin,
except my hands which I washed after applyiing the
bug lotion. Cause greasy hands don't help
you hold onto a whiffle-ball bat very well. Anyway,
so I'm outside playing and I look down and a mosquito
had just landed on the back of my hand and was going
to bite me!!!! Stupid mosquitos!
Well we had a fun time playing
halfcourt in the spirinkler anyway. And now
we're watching tv and I'm updating this blog! Fun
times. Tomorrow I'll start calling people.
Hopefully we'll start getting answers soon.
Sunbeam's Note:
Another evil thunder day. And then
my mom and dad went outside and came back in all
wet and drippy. I had to go into the sitting

their silliness getting me wet. People. Humans
are so weird. Hopefully tomorrow will be a
better day.

I applied for another job today. Hopefully
I'll start getting responses soon. Friday
I've got to start calling people. And then
hopefully I'll get TONS of people saying, "Oh
come work for us! PLEASE!!!!" And
Nicky will be happy and somewhat relaxed.
We played halfcourt again!
Since we're doing it to try and get exercise
we changed the scoring rules. We'd been getting
kinda lazy and not chasing after the ball when we
saw that it was going out of bounds. So we
started counting out of bounds shots for 1 point
and in the goal for 2 points and if we shoot it
in the corners (where there are lots of prickly
trees and plants and the ball is harder to get)
its 1 point for the other person. This way
we're better about actually going to try and stop
the ball. The total is still 10 points. Such
a fun game.
Sunbeam's Note:
Today was a good day. I got lots of good
contemplating done. And I finally got Uncle
Poly to agree with me about something. He
agrees with me that the Chinese were the most advanced
in science and that their invention of gunpowder
was crucial to the development of the modern world.
After that we were exhausted from debate and
decided to take a nap. And my mom Meghan seemed
to be excited about something, so that was probably
good. All in all a good day.

So we found the perfect
kind of ball to use in Halfcourt today! Walmart
plastic two dollar balls. The small kind.
They bounce off of lawn dents and just keep
going. You can really launch them too, as
long as you don't accidentally hit them over the
fence. We've managed to avoid that so far.
The IGs (Italian Greyhounds) next door don't
like us playing though. But they don't seem
to understand the concept of fences, the whole area
belongs to them.
Not much progress on the
job front today, we figured that the managerial
types would not be in their stores today so we didn't
bother calling. Guess I'll have to make some
progress on that during the week. I have to
really put effort in to this, cause Nicky's starting
to stress about it.
So tomorrow we're going
to see Herbie!!! I'm excited. I've seen
a review that didn't like it, but from what I read
they didn't like it because it was Herbie. Sappy,
happy ending, Herbie stuff. I mean, you think
of the original and the car known as Love Bug and
can you really expect it to be a cross between Star
Wars and the Interpreter? I expect that it'll
be a good wholesome happy-sappy movie!!
We went out to Walmart today
because Nick wanted to buy a real cheap digital
camera. He'd seen one for $20 on Walmart.com,
so we were going to buy one to be able to take pictures
and upload them for everybody on the trip. He
couldn't do it. He's too good a photographer,
he just couldn't bring himself to buy a cheap camera.
We stood there looking at two different $20
cameras and comparing them and he just couldn't
pick one. I finally turned to him and said,
"You can't do it can you." And he
looked at me and was like "I want to..."
But I knew he couldn't so I told him we'd
think about it and try again another time. Poor
Nicky.
Sunbeam's Note:
Thunder is evil. I don't think you humans
understand this. My mom and dad went out SHOPPING
in the horrible thunderstorm today. I was
forced to come downstairs and try to get Grampa
and Gramma to protect me. Fortunately they
came back ok. They didn't bring me anything
though, what's the point of going out if they don't
bring me anything. They could have been home
playing with me and protecting me from the evil
thunder. Needless to say I didn't get much

- CSI rerun
I always liked Calvin
and Hobbes when they were playing Calvinball.
It was so creative and original. I thought
Calvin was the most imaginative kid ever. And
then I married a Calvin... Well, Nick actually,
but you wouldn't believe the games he used to invent!
Halfcourt. I just learned it yesterday
and boy was it fun!! Kinda like street hockey
meets kickball, with just two people and played
in the backyard. Now in his blog he says that
the game requires two yellow whiffleball bats, but
I prefer the silver one, its slightly fatter and
shorter. It was fun.
Anyway, the job search is
not going well, cause I don't like calling people
I don't know. I'm going to have to crack down
on that though. If anybody has any ideas for
me, I welcome them! Later!
Sunbeam's Note:
Uncle Poly is so strange. We got into it
a couple of times today because I totally disagree
with him. Uncle Poly is of the opinion that
the fall of the Roman Empire and the subsequent
invasion by the Goths had no effect whatsoever on
life and society in Great Britain. I however
think it had a great effect. Anyway,
I wanted to update this blog earlier today, but
my mom Meghan wouldn't let me. I kept walking
across the keyboard trying to ask her nicely, but
she just kept telling me to sit down. Humans.

Watching
- Law & Order rerun
Ok, the move... It's kinda
intimidating really, I mean, I've lived in the same
city for almost 24 years, I mean, my mom still lives
in the house we moved into when I was one. I
know that's weird to most people, but to me the
idea of moving is weird. Although, I've always
wanted to move somewhere else and I'm really excited
about getting to move to Alaska. But its still
kinda unbelievable to me. Anyway, I'm really
excited about moving, not so excited about having
to call strange people and find a job, and really
REALLY excited to not have anymore homework!!!!
Sunbeam's Note:
I'm not really sure about all of this moving
stuff, I find it weird that I'm not in the apartment
anymore. But living with Uncle Poly and Gramma
June and Grampa Win is good. More
people to love me and play with me and feed me.
And Grampa Win is a fount of good conversation.
He's even beginning to help my mom Meghan
to understand me when I'm talking to her. She's
been a little slow in that department. Thank
goodness for Grampa Win and the
Mrs. Murphy Mysteries. Well, I'm off to
sit in my chair and contemplate the effect of the
fall of the Roman Empire on Modern Science.
